Complex aquatic plants (macrophytes),
along with algae, are the first step
of the pond food chain, combining minerals and sunlight energy by the
process of photosynthesis. The nutrients created at this juncture support
a host of consumers: fish, waterfowl, bacteria, zooplankton, fungi, and
others. These, and other crucial roles, make plants essential to a living
pond.
